Monumental Marks

As the NFL preseason begins, here are a few significant records that have recently been set by MLB players.

Dan Uggla just capped off a 33-game hit streak, which raised his batting average an entire 59 points (even though it was a weak .173 prior to the streak) and helped his team gain a strong lead on the NL wild-card race. It looks like the Braves will retain this position as the top NL wild-card playoff team.

Jim Thome also made his mark in baseball history by becoming only the 8th player to reach 600 home runs. In a time when this milestone has been tainted by steroid use, it’s nice to see a player reach this mark through hard work and natural strength. Now, his Minnesota Twins just need to pick up the slack and work their way back to at least .500.

Justin Verlander continued his pitching dominance tonight during his 18th win against the Twins. He has become the first pitcher to attain 17 wins in 4 of his first 5 seasons since Dwight Gooden in 1989. If he can continue this type of solid pitching and have some help from the other starting pitchers, Verlander might be able to take the Tigers back to the World Series.
