Oh What a Night

29 09 2011

At the beginning of the night, no playoff matches were set.

The Rangers and Brewers both won, locking up home field advantage in their respective league divisional series.

The wild-card madness had to get settled.  Here’s how it went down:

10:26 p.m. ET — Cardinals win 8-0 against the Astros

11:40 p.m. ET — Braves lose to the Phillies 4-3 in 13th, are eliminated

12:02 a.m. ET — Red Sox lose to the Orioles 4-3 on walk-off single in 9th

12:05 a.m. ET — Rays win 8-7 against the Yankees  on walk-off home run in 12th, eliminating Red Sox

So,

The Rangers will host the Rays tomorrow at 4:07 (CST)

The Yankees will host the Tigers tomorrow at 7:37 (CST)

The Phillies will host the Cardinals on Saturday (TBD)

The Brewers will host the Diamondbacks on Saturday (TBD)

On September 4, the Boston Red Sox led the Tampa Bay Rays by 9 games for the wild-card spot. Boston would go on to win only 4 games while Tampa Bay won 17 games during that time. This is the largest lead a potential playoff team has lost in September.

On September 6, the Atlanta Braves led the St. Louis Cardinals by 8 1/2 games for the wild-card spot. Atlanta would go on to win only 9 games, along with a 5-game losing streak to finish the season while St. Louis won 18 games during that time. This is the second largest lead a potential playoff team has lost in September.

This was definitely one of the craziest nights that I have ever seen in sport. The only other sport that is even comparable in excitement on any given night is college football, where every gameday counts.
