Damp Headed to Georgia

10 02 2012

Just when you thought the league was in a drought of solid, hard picks and tipped out rebounds, a certain center will be bringing that back.

The Atlanta Hawks have signed 6-year Dallas Maverick Erick Dampier to a 10-day contract. This contract will last until next Saturday.

Dampier played 51 games with the Miami Heat during the 2010-2011 season, averaging 2.5 points and 3.4 rebounds in 16 minutes of play.

The 17-9 Hawks desperately need Dampier’s size since they have already lost former All-Star Al Horford for the season because of a torn left pectoral muscle and Jason Collins for two weeks because of a sprained left elbow. Zaza Pachulia is the only true center left on this team’s depth chart.

Even though a lot of Dampier jokes are thrown around in the DFW community, he really will provide for the Hawks. He has a large frame that will make a much larger impact than when 6-8 Ivan Johnson has been forced to play back-up center. Bad shots from Dampier won’t be a problem for the Hawks since he hasn’t shot below 58.4% in the past five seasons.

The 15-year veteran will need to get to work right away as the Hawks play the Magic tonight and the Heat on Sunday.
