Even though numbers seem to have always been a part of professional sports, that is not the case. For the first 60 years the MLB was in existence, numbers were not included on teams’ jerseys. After a few organizations experimented wearing numbers one or two times in the early 20th century, in 1929, the New York Yankees decided to commit to numbers being a permanent part of their uniform. They distributed those according to each player’s position in the batting order.
